John,
Are you running an "atheism for idiots" course on this thread, or what?! :D

God = chicken?
Nah, some people just can´t tell the difference between humility and cowardice!

(For slow learners: John 13:1-15, Philippians 2:5-11)

Large dimensions, galaxies = no God?
Nah, only small minds and big egos come to that conclusion... ;)

Would God create a gigantic universe?

Here's what I'm hearing in that quote by J.M. Tour, above:

"Wow. Atoms are really hard to make. A Magic Man must have done it."

(

)
And here's what I'm hearing in Earthling's intention of quoting it:

"This guy is educated. Therefore, every belief he has must be right. Because people aren't inconsistent, in such a way that they can believe some things that are rational and some that aren't."

And while it's sad that people can believe such things, I think it's important to laugh at those people...

But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. " - a.k.a. "Don't masturbate".

Amy,
It´s complicated.

According to current information, the observable universe is about 46 billion light years in radius. The size of the entire Universe is unknown.

If you´re interested, you can read a whole lot more here

John,
You hear what you want to hear. What I hear is, "Only a rookie who knows nothing about science would say that science takes away from faith." Rookie = freshman, beginner.

Truth is, modern science owes a great deal to faith.

This guy is educated. Therefore, every belief he has must be right.

Naturally I neither said nor suggested any such thing, nor would I. Your statement is a fallacy, as well as being a projection, an interpretation and an assumption on your part. All YOURS, not mine.

So if you want to laugh at people, take out a mirror and laugh at yourself! ;) :)

That cartoon is actually a swipe at positivism: the view that information derived from logical and mathematical treatments and reports of sensory experience is the exclusive source of all authoritative knowledge, and that there is valid knowledge (truth) only in scientific knowledge. I´ve lost count of how many times I heard that from you and others...

Phew, do I really have to keep on explaining my jokes to you?! I thought you were intelligent... ;) :D

But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. " - a.k.a. "Don't masturbate".

LOL! Nah, John, I guessed you might come back with that quote - out of context, as usual...

Here, Jesus is talking about adultery, as in sexual relations outside marriage. He never mentions the word, masturbation, so we don´t know what he thinks about it. In speaking out against adultery, he is raising women up in a culture where they were seen as property. He is saying that we are not property and we are not objects of lust. We are human beings with our own identity and our own dignity. Do you have a problem with that?

Apart from which, masturbation is usually a solitary practice. And, it doesn´t need to be a sexual issue at all. It can be a symptom of anger, tension, low self-esteem and deep loneliness. Jesus meets such people with healing compassion.

So John, keep laughing - and I´ll keep laughing. We can laugh together! ;) <3

Truth is, modern science owes a great deal to faith.

Rubbish. Religious people have done scientific work. That does not mean that religion and science don't contradict each other. It means that people contradict themselves.
Married people also commit infidelity. Does that mean that marriage and infidelity are perfectly compatible?
Science means forming one's beliefs by logic and evidence only. No one who does that will conclude that it was a magic man dunnit. Nothing indicates that. A person who concludes that had already assumed that - usually from cultural or parental brainwashing.
Superstition and magical thinking is the antithesis to science. This is clear from the nature of superstition and science themselves. From the definitions of the concepts.
It doesn't matter who thinks what. This is an appeal to authority type or a non sequitur, and both are fallacies.
You hear what you want to hear. What I hear is, "Only a rookie who knows nothing about science would say that science takes away from faith." Rookie = freshman, beginner.

But that is not an argument at all. It is a weird, baseless and unexplained claim. Countless renowned scientists disagree. See this list, for example:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_atheists_in_science_and_technology

Never. Not from me, and it is a misrepresentation of positivism. A strawman.
There is a difference between truth and knowledge. One can happen to guess right. And in such a case, what one believes would in fact be true. But it would not be knowledge. It would be a lucky guess. Do I need to explain the difference?

But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. " - a.k.a. "Don't masturbate".

Oh my god...
Here's some context (note that I am the one giving context and you are just spurting lines):
"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.' BUT I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

"BUT I tell you..."
He is NOT talking about adultery. He is adding a new ban: Thoughtcrime. It is wrong to even think about sinning (the whole christian agenda is to make righteousness completely impossible, and if we buy into this manipulation and are reduced to wimpering wretches, we are probably also dumb enough to believe that crawling to Santa for forgiveness will fix all our problems, and thus the meme of christian superstition propagates...), and since masturbation includes fantasizing sexually about someone else, it is a sin.

Thus religion detaches morality from the reality of human and animal suffering.
What a world it would be if catholic priests would only jack off instead of molesting little boys.

John,

Rubbish. Religious people have done scientific work. That does not mean that religion and science don't contradict each other...

That, of course, has nothing to do with what I said. And you obviously didn´t bother to read the links. Pity, because you might actually learn something... But I guess, that would be too big a challenge to your comfort zone... ;)

Logic and evidence are only as good as the people using them. If you claim that nothing indicates God, you are making a philosophical statement based on a particular worldview, not a scientific one. You are interpreting science to suit your agenda. Talk about already assuming...

Countless renowned scientists disagree. See this list, for example:...

So? A list of people? And you just lectured me about "an appeal to authority type or a non sequitur" one sentence before this... Do you think I can´t come up with a list of people whose faith is relevant to their notable activities or public life, and who have publicly identified themselves as believers? Try this one - for starters!

You´re being very silly. This whole tirade show how very little you know about Christianity. And even less about Jesus Christ. The whole "Christian agenda" has made righteousness possible, and it has nothing to do with making us into "whimpering wretches"! Quite the contrary, it proclaims the truth will make us free. It is a pity you can´t get beyond your brainwashing...

You can, of course, get hung up on one sentence taken entirely out of its context and the context of all four Gospels, but you are only handicapping yourself. It is entirely evident Jesus is talking in the context of marriage, adultery and divorce... The sentence you quote (Matt.5: 28) is sandwiched between words about marrriage, adultery, divorce and purity of heart (Matthew 5: 27-31). They are also part of a discourse extending over THREE chapters (Matthew 5-8).

And for the record, masturbation doesn´t have to include fantasizing about anybody... It simply means to stimulate the genital organs to achieve sexual pleasure.

EDIT: But yes, I would consider any married man who thought about other women while having sex with his wife unfaithful. I would also consider a married man masturbating with pornography instead of having sex with his wife unfaithful. Both situations sully and damage the marriage relationship. Ask any woman! Or check out the material now available on the role of pornography addiction in the break-up of marriages and relationships. Our thoughts lead to actions. The actions can be nibbed in the bud by cutting off the feed. That is a choice we can make. Jesus invites us to make healthy choices.
http://themattwalshblog.com/2013/11/25/married-men-your-porn-habit-is-an-adultery-habit/

Thus religion detaches morality from the reality of human and animal suffering.

Where did that come out of? Where I come from, religion works quite the contrary. It means getting right into the thick of things and making a difference... You know, love your neighbour, feed the hungry, take your animal out of the well...

You keep singing the same old tune, but it´s very dishonest and sounds very flat these days...

What a world it would be if catholic priests would only jack off instead of molesting little boys.

This remark and your image above about getting a nun pregnant are just bad taste. Are they supposed to hurt me? Offend me? Wasted effort on your part, I regret to say... :)

I´m pretty sure some priests do fall into the habit of masturbation sometimes. After all, they are human beings like the rest of us.

I´m not going to defend priests who have abused children and young people. I will just say that according to available research 4% of ALL Catholic priests are offenders. That percentage is no higher than in any other group, and lower than several. 80% of priest who have offended sexually engaged with adolescent boys not prepubescent children. On the other hand, 60% of all incest is carried out by married men... Kind of puts things in perspective, I think.
